If you're using Windows and you've installed a UMAX driver, VueScan's built-in drivers won't conflict with this. If you haven't installed a Windows driver for this scanner, VueScan will automatically install a driver.
Run VueScanInsert image into scannerSet \"InputMedia type\"Press \"Preview\" buttonAdjust crop box with mousePress \"Scan\" buttonIf the colors don't look quite right inthe preview, try clicking with the right mousebutton (with control key on Mac OS) on an areaof the image that should be gray.To reset to the automatic color balance setting,double-click on the image with the right mousebutton (with control key on Mac OS).If the lighting in the scene is unusual (i.e.at sunset or with stage lighting), try setting\"ColorColor balance\" to \"Neutral\".Using Scanner as Copier\\item Run VueScan\\item Set \"InputScan task\" to \"Copy to printer\"\\item Set \"InputMedia type\"\\item Set \"InputMedia size\"\\item Insert image into scanner\\item Press \"Scan\" button\\item Repeat from step 5Working with Scanned ImagesVueScan is designed to save scanned images to JPEG files(by default) or TIFF files (optionally). You can configure your favorite image editing program toautomatically open each image when a scan completes. Use the\"PrefsExternal viewer\" option to control this.On Mac OS X, you can set up the default viewer for .tif and .jpg files by: click once on a .tif or .jpg file choose \"FileShow info\" choose \"Open with application\" pick the application you want to use press the \"Change All\" buttonOn Mac OS 9, the file type and file creator for the .tif,.jpg, and .bmp files are determined by the \"PrefsViewer\"option.On Windows, you can set up the program that automaticallystarts with scanned images by setting up a file associationfor .tif and .jpg files. To create a file association, clickon a .tif or .jpg file with the right mouse button, select \"Open with\", then \"Choose program\". Pick the programyou want to use, and also select \"Always use theselected program to open this kind of file\".On Linux, use the \"PrefsViewer\" option to select theapplication to use to view .tif and .jpg files.Note that VueScan's technique for saving scans to a fileuses half as much memory as when using a TWAIN interfaceor a Photoshop Import Filter. Since VueScan is designedto work with very large, high-resolution images, it doesn'tinclude a TWAIN interface or Photoshop Import Filter.(You need to turn on the \"PrefsRelease memory\" optionto release all image memory prior to sending the scanto the image viewer.)Note also that VueScan's technique for saving scans to a fileallows you to edit an image while simultaneously scanning thenext image. Since some scans can take between 5 and 10 minutes, this results in significantly higher productivity than whenusing a TWAIN interface or a Photoshop Import Filter.Scanning Roll of FilmIf you're scanning many frames from the same roll of film, the following procedure will optimally set the CCDexposure and film base color (i.e. mask color): Set \"InputMore options\" to \"All\" Set \"InputMedia type\" Insert film with most transparent area If \"InputLock exposure\" visible Clear \"InputLock exposure\" Press \"Preview\" button Adjust cropping if necessary If \"InputLock exposure\" visible Set \"InputLock exposure\" Press \"Preview\" button If \"InputLock film base color\" visible Set \"InputLock film base color\" Batch ScanningTo scan multiple images in a batch, set \"InputBatch scan\"to \"All\" to scan all frames in a device, or set it to \"List\"and type in the list of frames (i.e. \"4 3 1\" for frames 4,3 and 1, in that order).More InformationFor more information, refer to theVueScan User's Guide.General Scanning ResourcesYou can often find answers to common scanning questions bysearching the archives of the comp.periphs.scanners newsgroup withgroups.google.com.You can also discuss scanning techniques, problems andworkarounds with other experienced scanner users in this newsgroup. There's an excellent web site withscanning tipsmaintained by Wayne Fulton. are unsupported because the commands they use are undocumented by the vendors, are extremely complex and are difficult to reverse engineer. Most other unsupported scanners are parallel-port scanners internally, with an internal USB-parallel converter. The Canon FS2720 is unsupported because it uses a complex USB-SCSI converter internally and requires complex firmware downloads. The other Canon scanners aren't supported because Canon won't document the commands they use, and these commands are too complex to reverse-engineer.Supported Digital Camera Raw FilesVueScan has preliminary support for raw scan files for thedigital cameras in the following list. However, note thatthe colors will only be accurate if you use an IT8 cameratarget (like the one produced by Wolf Faust) and if youuse VueScan's \"ProfileProfile scanner\" command to createan ICC file for your camera.Future versions of VueScan will include built-in supportfor color correction for these files. If you have araw scan file of an IT8 target from one of these cameras, please send e-mail to support@hamrick.com with a description of howto obtain the raw scan file (or attach it if it's lessthan 2 MBytes).Canon PowerShot 600Canon PowerShot A5Canon PowerShot A50Canon PowerShot Pro70Canon PowerShot Pro90 ISCanon PowerShot G1Canon PowerShot G2Canon PowerShot G3Canon PowerShot S30Canon PowerShot S40Canon PowerShot S45Canon PowerShot S50Canon EOS D30Canon EOS D60Canon EOS 10DNikon D1Nikon D1HNikon D1XNikon D100Nikon E950*Nikon E990*Nikon E995*Nikon E2500*Nikon E4300*Nikon E4500*Nikon E5000Nikon E5700Olympus E-10Olympus E-20Olympus C5050ZMinolta DiMAGE 5 (untested)Minolta DiMAGE 7 (untested)Minolta DiMAGE 7iFuji FinePixS2ProKodak DCS315CKodak DCS330CKodak DCS420Kodak DCS460Kodak DCS460AKodak EOSDCS3BKodak EOSDCS1Kodak DCS720XKodak DCS760CKodak DCS760MKodak ProBackKodak PB645CKodak PB645HKodak PB645MKodak DCS Pro 14nSigma SD9*There is aprogram availablethat will enable raw files on these Nikon digital cameras.Mac OS X Release NotesYou can share one copy of VueScan among multiple Mac OS X usersby putting the VueScan folder into a read-only folder somewhereon the hard drive. This will cause the default folder for eachuser to be that user's \"Pictures\" folder. You can share a singleserial number among all users on a Mac OS X system by runningVueScan as root and entering the serial number into the\"About\" dialog box.If VueScan doesn't see your scanner on Mac OS X, first makesure that Apple System Profiler can see the scanner. If itdoesn't, try powering off the computer, powering off the scanner, powering on the scanner and then powering on the computer. If you've installed the Canon software for N-series or LIDEscanners, you need to use the \"System Preferences\" \"Login Items\",select the ButtonManager for your scanner and press the Remove button. If you're using an Epson 2400/2450 on Mac OS X, use theFirewire cable if you have problems with long startup timeswith USB.To usePIE (Pacific Image Electronics) scannerswith VueScan, you need to first installCyberView X(not CyberView 32) in the default location.VueScan uses the CyberView X libraries to control the scanner. If VueScan hangs when starting up, make sure that you don't havethe Internation Input Menu turned on - this causes problems withVueScan. This is in the International system preferences.Canon N-series and LIDE scanners are powered directly by the USB port. The USB port must provide a power supply of 500 mA. If you plugthe scanner into the USB port on a keyboard or other USB device, the scanner may not work properly. Attach the scanner directlyto a USB port on the computer or to a 500 mA self-powered USB hub.If you find that an N-series or LIDE scanner doesn't work with one ofyour USB ports, try plugging it into the other USB port.If you're using Mac OS X 10.0.4 or 10.1 with a SCSI scanner, you may need todownload newer Mac OS X SCSI driversDon't install this driver on Mac OS X 10.2 or later, since this can causekernel crashes. The driver for the beige G3 built-in SCSI has bugs on Mac OS X 10.1which have been fixed in 10.2. The driver for the beige G3 built-inSCSI is included with Mac OS X.If you don't have a SCSI interface on your Macintosh, many usershave reported success using VueScan with theBelkinFireWire/SCSI Adapter on Mac OS 9.x, 10.1 and 10.2.If you've installed the beta UMAX OS X scanner software, you'll needto remove the extensions it installed in order to use VueScan. These are stored in /System/Library/Extensions. To temporarilyremove them, just rename the .kext file to .kext.save.If you're using a Microtech FireSCSI adapter, make sure thatyou're using SCSI ID 0 and that the SCSI termination is correct. If you're using an Orange Micro 906F SCSI card, make sure it'supgraded to at least firmware version F1.35.If your scanner has a button on the front andif a program starts up when you press this buttonwhile running VueScan, you need to disable thisbehavior to get VueScan to work properly. To disable button polling on Epson scanners, use \"Epson Scanner Monitor Setup\" in the Applemenu (uncheck \"Enable monitoring\") or removethe \"Epson Scanner Monitor\" extension in Mac OS 9.Mac OS 9 Release NotesIf VueScan doesn't see your scanner on Mac OS 9, first makesure that Apple System Profiler can see the scanner. If itdoesn't, try powering off the computer, powering off the scanner, powering on the scanner and then powering on the computer.Canon N-series and LIDE scanners are powered directly by the USB port. The USB port must provide a power supply of 500 mA. For instance, to get the NikonLS-4000 to work with Mac OS 9.x, remove all the extensions thatbegin with the word \"Nikon\" (make sure you reboot with a filmholder inserted into the scanner). To get the Minolta Scan Elite II to work on Mac OS 9.x, you'll need toremove the following extensions. The extensions for theScan Multi II are similar. DS Elite Library MCM Library MCM Library DS MFSBaseLib2887 MFSFWDriver MFSFWExpLoader MFSFWFamily MFSLib2887To get a Umax Firewire scanner to work on Mac OS 9.x, you'll need toremove the PL3FWIO extension. If you're using a Microtech FireSCSI adapter, make sure thatyou're using SCSI ID 0 and that the SCSI termination is correct. If you're using an Orange Micro 906F SCSI card, make sure it'supgraded to at least firmware version F1.35.If your scanner has a button on the front andif a program starts up when you press this buttonwhile running VueScan, you need to disable thisbehavior to get VueScan to work properly. To disable button polling on Epson scanners, use \"Epson Scanner Monitor Setup\" in the Applemenu (uncheck \"Enable monitoring\") or removethe \"Epson Scanner Monitor\" extension in Mac OS 9.Several users have reported problems with someversions of the Kaleidoscope extension onMac OS 9. Removing this extension willsolve the problem.Windows Release NotesIf you've set up a shortcut to vuescan.exe and are havingproblems, try double-clicking c:\\vuescan\\vuescan.exe directly. This will test whether the problem is with the way the shortcutwas set up or whether the problem is with VueScan. To usePIE (Pacific Image Electronics) scannerswith VueScan, you need to first installCyberView X(not CyberView 32).VueScan uses the CyberView X libraries to control the scanner. If your scanner has a button on the front andif a program starts up when you press this buttonwhile running VueScan, you have a program runningin the background that you need to stop. To stopthis program, press control-alt-delete, choose thetask manager and use it to stop this program. Oneexample of this is the Epson Status Monitor.VueScan works on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP, and works withall known SCSI cards. It also works fine withmultiple computers on a single SCSI bus (i.e. dualported access to scanners). If you're using Windows 2000 or Windows XP and a SCSI scanner andif VueScan doesn't find your SCSI scanner, you may need todownload and install ASPI(you don't need this for USB scanners):If VueScan won't start and you have Logitech MouseWareor a Logitech keyboard installed, try stoppingEM_EXEC.EXE and/or ITOUCH.EXE. There have been somereports of these two programs causing problems withVueScan. (These two Logitech programs cause problemsfor many other Windows programs as well.) Alternatively, try turning off the \"Smart Move\" option in MouseWare. If you have an ELSA Synergy III graphics card (or possiblyother NVideo graphics cards) and VueScan hangs whenstarting, you may need to disable the Desktop Managerthat comes with the card (the file that causes the problem isnvdesk32.dll).Linux Release NotesOn Linux, run vuescan from any directory.Your serial number will be stored in \".vuescanrc\"in your home directory.Note thatPIE (Pacific Image Electronics) scannersdo not work with VueScan on Linux becauseCyberView Xisn't available on Linux.VueScan uses the CyberView X libraries to control the scanner. If you're using Red Hat Linux 8.0 or later, you may needto set up the the environment variable LANG to C. Forinstance, to run VueScan with this set, type:env LANG=C vuescanYou need to make sure all of the /dev/sg* devices areread/write accessible. To see what scanners are available, type \"cat /proc/scsi/scsi\".Note that the Adaptec AVA-1505 SCSI card doesn'twork with a Nikon film scanner, and will cause ahard bus hang if you use VueScan with it. Thisis due to a bug in the aha152x driver. Another bugin this driver causes junk to be appended to theend of a raw scan when using the PhotoSmart. OtherSCSI cards seem to work fine with VueScan on Linux. There have also been problems reported with theAdaptec AVA-2904E and the Canon FS2710, althoughthis combination works fine on Windows. If you want to add or remove scsi devices withoutrebooting your system, use the following commands:echo \"scsi add-single-device 0 0 0\" > /proc/scsi/scsiecho \"scsi remove-single-device 0 0 0\" > /proc/scsi/scsi(use the SCSI ID in place of \"\" above)To use USB scanners on Linux, you need to load thescanner driver and specify the vendor ID and product IDof the scanner. For instance, to recognize the Canon N670U, use\"modprobe scanner vendor=0x04a9 product=0x220d\". Then type\"cat /proc/bus/usb/devices\" and make sure \"Driver=usbscanner\"is enabled for your scanner. If you're using Linux 2.4.12 or later, you don't needto do anything special to have the scanner auto-recognized.If you're using an earler version of Linux with a USBscanner, set up the SCANNER0 environment variable to pointto /dev/usbscanner or /dev/usb/scanner (it needs to beread/write accessible), set up the SCANVID0 environmentvariable with the USB Vendor ID (VID) and set up theSCANPID0 environment variable with the USB Product ID (PID).You can support up to 8 USB scanners at a time by usingSCANNER1, SCANNER2, SCANVID1, SCANVID2, etc. Some VID/PID pairs for scanners that VueScan supports are: VID PID Scanner ---- ---- --------------------------- 03f0 0101 HP 4100 03f0 0201 HP 6200 03f0 0401 HP 5200 03f0 0505 HP 2100 03f0 0601 HP 6300 03f0 0605 HP 2200 0400 1000 BearPaw 1200 0400 1001 BearPaw 2400 0458 2007 ColorPage-HR6 0458 2008 Genius 0458 2009 Genius 0458 2013 Genius 0458 2015 Genius 0458 2016 Genius 04a5 any Acer/BenQ scanners 04a9 2201 Canon FB320U 04a9 2202 Canon FB620U 04a9 2205 Canon FB1210U 04a9 2206 Canon N650U 04a9 2207 Canon N1220U 04a9 2208 Canon D660U 04a9 220d Canon N670U / LIDE 20 04a9 220e Canon N1240U / LIDE 30 04a9 3042 Canon FS4000US 04b0 4000 Nikon CoolScan IV (LS-40) 04b8 0101 Epson Perfection 636 (GT-7000) 04b8 0102 Epson GT-2200 (GT-2200) 04b8 0103 Epson Perfection 610 (GT-6600) 04b8 0104 Epson Perfection 1200 (GT-7600) 04b8 0105 Epson StylusScan 2000 04b8 0106 Epson StylusScan 2500 04b8 0107 Epson Expression 1600 (ES-2000) 04b8 0108 Epson CC-700 04b8 0109 Epson Expression 1640XL (ES-8500) 04b8 010a Epson Perfection 1640 (GT-8700) 04b8 010b Epson Perfection 1240 (GT-7700) 04b8 010c Epson Perfection 640 (GT-6700) 04b8 010e Epson Expression 1680 (ES-2200) 04b8 010f Epson Perfection 1250 (GT-7200) 04b8 0110 Epson Perfection 1650 (GT-8200) 04b8 0111 Epson Perfection 2450 (GT-9700) 04b8 0112 Epson Perfection 2450 (GT-9700) 04b8 011a Epson 1000 ICS 04b8 011b Epson Perfection 2400 (GT-9300) 04b8 011c Epson Perfection 3200 (GT-9800) 04b8 011d Epson Perfection 1260 (GT-7300) 04b8 011e Epson Perfection 1660 (GT-8300) 04b8 0801 Epson CX-5200 (CC-600PX) 04b8 0802 Epson CX-3200 (CC-570L) 0638 026a Minolta Scan Dual II 0686 400d Minolta Scan Dual III 0686 400e Minolta Scan Elite 5400 06bd 2061 AGFA SnapScan 1212U 06bd 0100 AGFA SnapScan Touch (not supported) 06bd any other AGFA scanners 07b3 0005 Plustek 07b3 0007 Plustek 07b3 000f Plustek 07b3 0010 Plustek U12 07b3 0011 Plustek U24 07b3 0012 Plustek 07b3 0013 Plustek 07b3 0014 Plustek A3 07b3 0015 Plustek U24 07b3 0016 Plustek 07b3 0017 Plustek 1606 0060 Umax 3400 1606 0160 Umax 5400For instance, to set up VueScan for the Epson 640, usethe following commands if you're using csh: setenv SCANNER0 /dev/usbscanner setenv SCANVID0 04b8 setenv SCANPID0 010cor if you're using sh or bash: export SCANNER0=\"/dev/usbscanner\" export SCANVID0=\"04b8\" export SCANPID0=\"010c\"Note that you don't need to set up these environment variableson newer Linux kernels. If you're having problems with USB timeouts (i.e. withthe Nikon CoolScan IV (LS-40), make sure you use the\"usb-uhci\" (CONFIG_USB_UHCI) module instead of thealternate \"uhci\" (CONFIG_UHCI_ALT) module. You might alsoincrease the kernel usb timeout value (CONFIG_USB_LONG_TIMEOUT=y).Removing VueScanTo remove VueScan, delete the entire directory. There are no files installed elsewhere on thesystem.WarrantyTHIS SOFTWARE AND ACCOMPANYING DOCUMENTATION (INCLUDINGINSTRUCTIONS FOR USE) ARE PROVIDED \"AS IS\" WITHOUT WARRANTYOF ANY KIND, FURTHER, HAMRICK SOFTWARE DOES NOT WARRANT,GUARANTEE, OR MAKE ANY REPRESENTATIONS REGARDING THE USE,OR THE RESULTS OF USE, OF THE SOFTWARE OR DOCUMENTATIONIN TERMS OF CORRECTNESS, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, CURRENTNESS,OR OTHERWISE.
