Political science is first and foremost the study of the way in which the human beings and institutions (bodily and spiritual) in a society interact with each other and with the physical environment to create and maintain a stable and sustainable government. Political science seeks to describe the principles of the social order and the processes that shape the world. It is concerned with the interactions of people with each other and with institutions in order to achieve goals. Political science is the science of causes and reasons. Its goal is to provide the necessary knowledge to understand and explain political processes, such as elections, legislation, and social conflict.
Theory of political science is an academic discipline in its own right. Political theorists study the history and development of political systems and how they function (Kekes 1995). Theory includes concepts, such as “government”, “social order”, “political philosophy”, “ideology”, “theory of history”, “epistemology”, “metaphysics”, and “sociology”. Many political theorists are philosophers. Political theorists can be divided into two groups:
• Phenomenological theorists tend to describe the hows of political processes. • Theory-driven theorists tend to be more interested in what the political processes are. Theory-driven theorists are more concerned with the causes of political processes. Theories can be classified as: social constructivist, critical theory, liberal, communitarian, political philosophy, and political realism (Kekes 1995).
Political science research methods are those methods that can be used to answer specific research questions. These can be grouped into three types: experimental, quantitative, and qualitative. It may be that no single method can answer a question but a combination of different methods may provide a more complete answer to the question in hand. All of these methods are used in political science and frequently intersect with each other. The methods of political science research are divided between two main camps: “hard” and “soft”.
J. R. Searle defines a scientific explanation as one that describes a relationship between cause and effect. He also points out that the concept of cause has been used both in natural sciences as well as in social sciences. 827ec27edc
