NASA has successfully launched the next International Observe Mission (IOM) into orbit called *AstroSat* on a PSLV-C28 launch vehicle on 23rd January 2013. AstroSat, a joint Indian-Indian mission, is intended to promote the development of microsatellites to serve the new space domain to study the Sun’s photosphere and lower atmosphere, the heliosphere, and also provide earth science in support of climate, weather, and environmental research.
AstroSat’s payload comprises four science instruments with different research themes in mind: The Sun’s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) is designed to measure and image solar EUV and Lyman-alpha emissions from the chromosphere and corona, with an effective field-of-view (FOV) of 20-25 degrees, of which only 1-2 degrees are inclined 45 degrees from the satellite’s rotation axis. The spacecraft will map the Solar corona in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths (10-30 nm), complementing the high-resolution Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which operates in the 193 nm passband. The Far Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (FUVIS) is not a sounding rocket-type instrument but rather a robust payload, which can be accurately pointed to observe a selected restricted region of the spectrum. Its instruments can detect the shortest UV light emitted by the Sun, from 10-13 nm. The payload includes a coronagraph which will block light from stars and allow the observer to study the Sun. The Solar Wind Analyzer (SWAN) is designed to map the distribution of the Solar wind and its properties. The payload involves an innovative electrostatic ion-drag dust-free collector with a Cylindrical Anode Structure designed to eliminate the potential damaging effects of dust particles. The Payload will also equip the spacecraft with four six-axis star sensors. This will provide three dimensional mapping of the solar disk so that background stars can be considered in the data analysis. d2c66b5586
