Finally, Gore Vidal attacked Buckley for dalliance with right-wing activists. In early 1968, Irving Kristol, a leading moderate within the Republican Party, hosted a series of essays on the politics of fear by political activists, including Buckley. When Buckley reprised his supposedly Freudian reading of the essays during a speech at the 1967 Republican National Convention, Vidal stepped in and attacked him for deliberately twisting the writers' points to fit his own political persuasion.

Buckley's response was to attack Vidal for his dalliance with Joseph McCarthy and for his sympathy for communism, which the journalist had been a defense of since the 1950s.[93] Buckley's ultimate goal for the 1967 essay series was to prove that the activists were not "really" warning about the dangers of "negative liberty" (i.e., "the right to do what you want as long as it harms no one") but rather the dangers of "positive liberty"--that is, "the right to do what you want even if it harms others."

Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater proposed stricter immigration laws, welfare reform, and the abolition of a number of government agencies, including health, labor, and civil rights commissions.
