When you go looking, however, the benefits of PCSS are clear - in this scene, instead of having hard shadows from every caster, we have soft shadows in the center of the picture from casters further away, and harder shadows on the bottom left from a small piece of foliage directly to the left of the camera. On the grass, we see higher-quality shadowing that improves the definition of each shadow, and scene-wide we note superior shadow filtering, helping to reduce artifacts and aliasing.
Performance: To summarize, at lower detail levels a number of reductions occur to shadows game-wide. At close range, the detail and sharpness of shadows is reduced; at medium range the general detail of shadows and the number rendered is reduced; and at long range the number of shadows rendered at any one time is reduced. Lowering the setting will unexpectedly improve frames rates, but be aware that dropping below Ultra introduces a noticeable degree of pop-in, fade-in, and LoD'ing of shadows, in addition to the loss of time of day shadows in many scenes, harming image quality considerably.
Performance: With so much terrain on-screen at any one time, the Terrain Quality setting has an unsurprisingly large impact on frame rates, saving players up to 6 frames per second on its lowest detail level. The result, however, is very visible pop-in of grass, reduced surface detail, and lower-quality mountains and cliffs, of which there are many in Far Cry 4. If you have to lower the setting, we'd recommend High; at Medium and Low there's just too much pop-in, especially when whizzing across the sky in a wingsuit, glider or helicopter, and occasionally you encounter the low-quality mountains highlighted in our initial comparison.
Between Ultra and Medium the quality of the reflection and water ripple are reduced, with the occasional mid-range detail being culled from the reflection to improve performance. Even on Low, though, reflections from the immediate vicinity remain, ensuring a respectable level of image quality at all times for those increasing performance.
The best way to compare these screenshots is to download them, open each up in Windows Photo Viewer or a similar application, zoom in on specific portions, and compare side by side using Windows' half-and-half display mode. Comparing 3840x2160 (4K) to 1920x1080, we see improvements across the entire scene - on Ajay's bow the text near the arrow's shaft is readable, aliasing is reduced, close range foliage is more detailed and has fewer artifacts, mid-range foliage is fuller and more detailed, roads are more detailed, as is the wall debris nearby, geometry and fine details are sharper and clearer, shadowing is improved, Ambient Occlusion shadowing is similarly improved, distant foliage is detailed enough to make out tree trunks and branches, distant characters can clearly be seen, and in motion everything is significantly nicer to look at. Essentially, everything is improved.
One of the biggest launches of 2021, is finally available now on all major gaming platforms. This sixth installment to the Far Cry series, Far Cry 6 is, undoubtedly, one of the most anticipated gaming titles of this year, and you can easily tell by looking at the comments it is getting from the community and the reviewers. As always, the game has been developed by Ubisoft. Ubisoft Toronto, to be more specific.
This has been one of the most anticipated games of 2021 along with FIFA 22 and Battlefield 2042. However, even though the game is running smoothly on consoles like Xbox Series X/S and even PlayStation 4 & 5, some PC specific problems are being faced by some players.
Corpse Stay: Determines the number of seconds before corpses (dead characters) disappear from view. Because lots of characters (dead or alive) on the screen can slow down graphics, setting this to a lower value can help reduce FPS slowdowns in heavy fight scenes by removing the dead bodies quickly. Conversely, if you want dead bodies to never disappear for ultra realism, set the value to 999.
Like with the Pugetsystems DDR4 vs DDR5 bench linked in the Productivity section, I expect to see results like this greatly improved as DDR5 is iterated upon and CAS Latencies are reduced in the coming years.
Amazon's Luna game streaming service launched in invitation-only early access last year, but now it's fully available as a subscription (or series of subscriptions) that any Amazon user can access. It's as bandwidth-reliant as any game streaming service, but its $49.99 Luna Controller gamepad uses a separate Wi-Fi connection to further reduce a game's input lag by sending its inputs directly to Amazon's servers instead of through the device you're playing on. It's technically optional, but between improved performance and seamless ability to switch between Luna-compatible devices, we consider it an effective requirement to get the most out of Luna.
The Luna Controller connects to Amazon directly through its own Wi-Fi connection, which Amazon says reduces latency by 17 to 30 milliseconds. Setting up the controller requires the free Luna Controller app, which walks you through connecting it to your Wi-Fi signal. You can also use the gamepad as a standard Bluetooth controller, if you wish. You can also use a compatible Bluetooth controller, such as the DualShock 4 or Xbox Wireless Controller, paired with your desired device to play Amazon Luna games without the reduced latency. The service felt responsive with an Xbox Wireless Controller, but I could feel just a bit more input lag in games than I felt with the Luna Controller.
Available for less than the price of a Starbucks coffee, Vampire Survivors is a bullet hell roguelite that is in early access. Since its late 2021 launch on Steam, this indie game has frequently released patches containing new stages, characters, and weapons, most of which add hours of content to the base experience.
Hello there!I apologise for the delayed update. This issue wherein sudden FPS drops followed by a crash could be caused when navigating the Arsenal menu / crafting bench / weapon wheel should have been resolved by a fix deployed on 20th December, 2021.
