Let me just state that I love the ICC profiles. It is probably the best thing that has ever happened to offset printing. The ICC profiles allow for a lot of flexibility. Offset printing is a process that works best with a particular number of colors (many more colors than what may appear on screen). There may be some variation in the actual number of colors one can get. One can adjust the color by adding or subtracting ink colors. It also is true that there may be some variation in the amount of ink used for a given color. The ICC profiles allow for that too. Offset printing is not as finnicky as screen printing or overprinting. The line of print is the same width through the whole roll. This is the same in the case of screen printing. This makes offset printing much easier to produce. However, in terms of the color of that line of print, it is possible to vary it by a certain amount. One can also get a full gamut of colors. (In terms of the amount of ink applied, this is as close as screen printing gets to an endless amount of color.) It is also possible to set up the color and ink for each individual color used in the print job. The color of that particular color is set to the color which is actually being printed. This allows for one to print without a color reproduction error. (The error is that the color of the line printed appears to be slightly off of what should be there.) This is very important in offset printing. The printing company can only print a certain number of colors. If the inks they use are a very long way off from the colors used in the print job, it is very easy to have a color error. Having a better color reproduction in the offset printing company also means that they can save ink. (It is only a very small amount of ink per color used. Offset printing companies can often print a lot of colors.) Offset printing uses an offset roll. The ink is pressed into the roll by an engraved cylinder. When the roll is pulled through the printing press, ink is pressed into the paper. Ink is very expensive. The more ink used, the more expensive the ink is. An offset roll can last many years. It is a very expensive part of the offset printing process. Its cost is paid for over the production of thousands of pieces. With the ICC profiles, one is able to set the color of the offset roll to match the colors which will be printed.
