Prof. Ed Roberts is the John Marshall S. and Katie S. Jacobs Professor of Practice in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Washington. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, a B.Sc. from the University of British Columbia, and a M.Sc. from the University of Toronto. His research interests include interactive narrative, visualization, and aesthetics. His most recent publications have been in the areas of visualizing and creating narrative stories, using novels as case studies, and evaluating narrative content. His work has appeared in Communications of the ACM, ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, and ACM Transactions on Applied Perception. He serves on the board of Engaging Education, a nonprofit that provides free educational content to students in under-resourced public schools. He has developed curricular materials for the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
Leah Wells is a post-doctoral associate at the University of Washington. She received a Master’s of Science in Design Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is currently working towards a PhD in Design Studies at the University of Washington. Previously, she has worked at the University of Washington on the Interaction Design Program Research team, where she completed a dissertation in Collaborative Design Tools for Professional Software Design. With the University of Washington, she has worked on Design and Implementation Studies and User-centered Research programs. Leah has a passion for user-centered design, interface design, and interaction design, and also enjoys writing and exploring ideas about design, narrative, and literature.
Julia Thorne is a student at the University of Washington pursuing a PhD in Design-Relevant Data Science. Julia’s academic focus is in user-centered design, and she is particularly interested in the integration of design and data science. She has been studying and working in the areas of data visualization, interaction design, and information design for the last four years, has prior experience in iterative prototyping as a research intern, and has worked in academic design research for the last year. She is also an avid amateur photographer and listener of many podcasts.
