Dragon Quest IV is a classic JRPG, and its influence was felt on every subsequent Dragon Quest game. The game did introduce several ideas to the series that were later used by subsequent games, such as an emphasis on item creation, the concept of marriage, and a wide variety of monsters.
It only took 8 years, but this is finally the first official release of Dragon Quest IV in the West. The license had fallen into obscurity for years, and the fact that the game's localization was handled by Square Enix, who were already the ones who localized Dragon Quest VII's Western release, was the last straw. It's a shame, because this is an absolutely fantastic game, with its own unique take on the franchise's story, characters, and mechanics. It's not as structurally sound as some other Dragon Quests, but it's still a fantastic JRPG.
Dragon Quest IV is a classic JRPG, and its influence was felt on every subsequent Dragon Quest game. The game did introduce several ideas to the series that were later used by subsequent games, such as an emphasis on item creation, the concept of marriage, and a wide variety of monsters. It was also the first time that the story was told in a chronological manner, and the first time that the main characters had free will, rather than being at the mercy of an overarching plot dictated by characters like they were in the Dragon Quest games of previous generations. It's a game which almost single-handedly set the standard for the rest of the series, and a great one to be the first.
Despite all the third-party support on the system, the Wii was still missing a few important titles. The demo for Super Mario Galaxy showed a Mario game that was as good as or better than anything on the PS2, N64, or GameCube. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess also looked fantastic, and the new game would be the first in the series to utilize the HD rumble pack. But there was still a gap between the PS2 and the Wii in terms of RPGs. With the release of this year's 13th anniversary edition of the original Dragon Quest and the announcement of a remake of one of the series' strongest entries, the Dragon Quest series was finally set to return to the Wii's system. At E3 2006, Nintendo had also finally announced the sequel to the first Super Smash Bros. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was announced, and a new sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee, was announced as well. It was also announced that the Wii RPG, an RPG for the system exclusive to Nintendo's own Virtual Console service, would be released on February 9, 2007.
The first game of the series to have a king in it, it is a grand exploration of a world of monsters, spells and incredible gameplay. The story serves as a fitting prequel to the events in Dragon Quest V, and the monsters provide a strong contrast to the human cast. It's a fun dungeon-crawler where you are the protagonist, and it's a real treat to see the Dragon Quest series take a page from Zelda in terms of its presentation and gameplay. 827ec27edc
