This study aims at optimizing the design of an irrigation system with a variable speed pump and variable head controls. We focus on the sprinkler irrigation system. The most recent survey in Iran (2009) found the sprinkler irrigation system was the most common system for rice cultivation (83%).

The study consists of two phases. In the first phase, we determine the optimal pump and system parameters. The optimal parameters are those that yield the maximum efficiency and minimum electricity consumption. In the second phase, we simulate and evaluate the optimal irrigation system based on different pump parameters and irrigation system parameters. The pump efficiency and the electrical energy consumption are estimated in both phases. The irrigation system parameters and the pump parameters (primarily the pump speed) may affect the performance of the irrigation system.

The study is carried out in the farm of Anar (province of West Azarbaijan, Iran). The farm is irrigated using a variable speed pump at a head of 16 m. The process is carried out on a rice field. The irrigation period lasts for ten months, from March to December. The plantation area is 75 ha. The average rainfall in the previous year was 673 mm.

The optimal irrigation design is developed using a genetic algorithm. The related parameters are optimized using a semi-empirical method. The genetic algorithm uses the concept of calculating the fitness of individuals and the concept of crossover in order to develop a set of designs based on the individual fitness values.
