I am using VM Workstation V12 and this trick does not work for this version. It just says that the .vhd File is incompatible with Workstation Version xx.x. It does this no matter what hardware version you select on screen 2 of the wizard. I can say however, that it worked when I was using Version 9. I am currently trying StarWind V2V image converter and will report my results.
Disk Converter tools are essential especially when you are migrating virtual machine workloads between two hypervisors. Each Hypervisor uses different virtual machine disk formats such as VMDK for VMware virtual disk and VHD for Hyper-V based virtual machine disks. You may need some tools to convert VHD to VMDK if you are importing VM from Hyper-V to VMware ESXi because ESXi host will not understand the disk format of Hyper-V virtual machine (VHD). There are lot of free tools in the market to convert disk format of virtual machines to make it compatible to different hypervisors.
We are going to list out the some of 3 of the free tools to Convert VHD to VMDK and vice versa. I have personally used this tools for my lab environment to convert virtual machine disks such as VHD to VMDK and VMDK to VHD to import and test virtual machine workloads across Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESXi. The order listed here may not have any preference of 1 or 2 or any order. I have explained some of the important features of each of the free Conversion software for better understanding.
StarWind V2V Converter is a free download tool that allows the conversion and cloning of VMs from one format to another and is utilized when migration or hypervisor switch is required. Compared to typical converters built into hypervisors, StarWind V2V Converter performs bi-directional conversion between multiple VM formats such as VHD to VMDK and VMDK to VHD. Starwind V2v Converter supports the most widely used formats: VMDK, VHD/VHDX (Windows Repair Mode aware), StarWind native IMG and QCOW.
I Will talk about the detailed procedure to convert disk formats using these Free tools in upcoming tools. I hope this is informative for you. Thanks for reading !!!. Be social and share it with social media, if you feel worth sharing it.
Virtualization is a great way to extend the utilization of hardware in one's organization. Most companies today have virtualized their environment with VMware, HYPERV, or other products. But what happened if for your reasons must convert your VMware Environment in HYPER-V or a specific task required to convert only one VMware client in HYPERV The previous month I face an issue that required me to convert my Domain Controller from VMware to HYPER-V. The reason was that I didn't have a VMware Lab in a different network to copy my Domain Controller but already I have configured a HYPER V Server as Test Environment. So I decided to convert my VMware Client to HYPER-V. I start my research and I found the Microsoft Virtual Converter tool.
If you want to read and learn more details about VMC (Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter) you can open the Convert Linux Server to HYPER-V from ESX Server that i wrote after this article and describe how can convert a Linux Server to HYPER-V from MVMC Console.
The reason is that we not proceed with the migration of all VMware Environment (ESX) but will convert only one VM. With a GUI Environment of Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter you can proceed only if you have vCenter Server, ESX or ESXI. So you can't convert on that way this time but we can proceeded with CLI to convert virtual hard disk and create the new VM.
If you don't want to proceed with the Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Console then you can use Powershell to convert specific VMware Virtual Machine without need to connect in the ESXi.
QEMU is an open-source machine emulation and virtualization utility that is used to convert virtual disks from one format to another. That is, you can use it to convert VHD to VMDK, as well as convert Hyper-V to VMware virtual disks. The program runs under Windows and Linux.
Certain situations may necessitate converting VHD files to VHDX, or VHDX files to VHD. For example, a Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) template referencing a VHDX cannot be deployed to a Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V server, therefore this template will need to be recreated using a VHD file.
When converting an image file with Windows, ensure the virtiodriver is installed.Otherwise, you will get a blue screen when launching the imagedue to lack of the virtio driver.Another option is to set the image properties as below when youupdate the image in the Image service to avoid this issue, but it will reduce virtual machine performance significantly.
StarWind V2V Converter / P2V Migrator is a free software for cloning and transforming VMs from one format to another, as well as converting physical machines into virtual ones. It is utilized when migration or Hypervisor Switch is required. Compared to the typical converters built into hypervisors, StarWind V2V Converter / P2V Migrator offers bi-directional conversion between all the major VM formats: VMDK, VHD/VHDX (Windows Repair Mode aware), QCOW2, and StarWind native IMG.
StarWind V2V Converter has numerous competitive gains over converters built into your standard hypervisors. First, it supports bi-directional VM conversion between various hypervisor vendor formats. To save time during migration and Hypervisor Switch, V2V Converter allows to convert VMs directly from one hypervisor server to another without creating an extra VM disk copy. On top of that, you can easily migrate your vital host VM images between different hypervisor servers without any data loss or corruption. Want to convert local files V2V can do that, too.
StarWind V2V Converter enables the conversion of a physical machine into a virtual one that resides on a Hyper-V, ESXi, Xen Project, or another industry-standard hypervisor server. It allows converting physical disks or volumes into a variety of formats: VHD/VHDX, VMDK, QCOW, and IMG/RAW. Simply start StarWind V2V Converter on a physical machine and convert it into a virtual one located on a remote server. Data consistency is preserved throughout the migration.
You also have the ability to convert your physical volumes, disks, or entire physical machines into instances in the public cloud without any intermediary steps. Boot up StarWind V2V Converter on your physical machine, choose the desired physical source, opt for Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure (the cloud of your choice) and press convert. The process is quick and safe, eliminating any chances of data corruption or loss thanks to VSS snapshots.
Whatever the hypervisor, StarWind V2V will easily convert your virtual resources to cloud instances in a public cloud in a snap. All popular virtualization formats are supported for this feature as well. Select any virtual disk or VM on your remote hypervisor server, choose AWS or Azure (depending on what you use), and see the magic unfold.
Finally, our solution can convert and migrate smoothly between AWS and Azure! Abiding by the same bi-directional principle, you can easily switch to or bounce between these public cloud services, shifting your VMs and disks how you want them. Again, no copies or extra space is required: the process occurs directly from cloud to cloud, securing solid data safety and integrity.
VHD/VHDX and VMDK are the virtual disk formats in VMware and Hyper-V environment. They contain the applications and other data of VMs. When IT administrators need to move data from Hyper-V to VMware, one of the methods is converting the virtual disks.
QEMU-img is an open-source virtual hard disk converter which allows you to change the formats of several kinds of files including VHD, VMDK, QCOW2, etc. You need to install this software on computer and then convert virtual disk with commands. It also requires you to add the directory to path environment variables.
Converting virtual hard disk is one of the ways to migrate VM so it is a useful skill for IT administrator. In this post, you can know the commands of using QEMU-img and the steps of using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to convert VHD to VMDK for VMware migration.
Typically, I find myself doing most of my conversions directly from physical hosts (P2V) or from Hyper-V host to VMware ESXi hosts. We do however have a few clients that use Hyper-V in their environments and luckily, Microsoft does have a utility for easily converting VMware virtual guest OS directly from your vSphere environment, or in my situation, from a VMware Fusion VMDK file to a Hyper-V VHD file.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to convert between virtual machine image formats (including qcow2, vdi, vhd, and vmdk), so that you can take your virtual environments from your desktop to the cloud and back again as needed.
This will provide the entire suite of QEMU tools and commands, including qemu-img, which is used to convert virtual machine images on the command line. Verify that you have access to the qemu-img command by running which qemu-img:
There are alternatives available to QEMU and VirtualBox for virtualization. However, most of these are platform-specific (such as Hyper-V on Windows) or designed for large-scale enterprise use (such as VMware). They will not be covered directly in this tutorial, but you will convert their image formats in the following steps.
The -f flag is used to specify the input format and the input filename. The -O flag is used to specify the output format and the output filename. You can also include the -p flag to show a progress bar, which is helpful when converting very large images. The image that you created in the last step will convert instantly, because it does not have any contents yet. You can confirm that you created ubuntu-desktop-22.04.vdi using ls: 153554b96e
