Over the last few decades, Guiyu has been a study site for environmental health, cultural heritage, and sustainable development. The majority of the research has focused on environmental issues. For example, studies have sought to understand the urban environmental health effects of the community (e.g., [65][66][67]), its community health effects (e.g., [68][69][70][71][72][73]), its cultural heritage (e.g., [74][75][76][77]), and the sustainable development of Guiyu (e.g., [78][79][80][81][82]). Previous studies have documented and illustrated the environmental health issues of Guiyu. Guiyu is a typical e-waste recycling center in China and more than 75% of the local households are involved in e-waste recycling. The number of e-waste recycling workshops in China has reached 500,000 in 2011[63]. As shown in Figure 1, the wafer-thin and brittle cable component is mostly removed using metal claws and then recycled. The waste is then cut into small pieces (about 1-2 cm in length) using a metal saw, and then placed into a metal basin to be further processed. Before being used as new cable, the cable is shredded to smaller pieces (about 3-4 cm in length) using a metal shredder. The shredder is a type of hydraulic press, which is mainly used for cutting metal waste. It has two steel plates, and the waste is pressed between them. The waste is then crushed into smaller pieces, and burned in a furnace. The melted waste is dropped into water to form a slag. The slag is then scraped into a metal basin, and next recycled into new cable. In Guiyu, the e-waste processing system is quite simple, and the processing process is long and arduous. The waste is obtained from local residents, and the processing cost is low. In Guiyu, the waste is not disposed of legally, and the processing cost is low, which makes the waste processing very attractive to local people. Therefore, the company's leadership is reluctant to try to regulate the waste processing activities in the community. As a result, the large number of workshops in Guiyu has grown exponentially, and a small number of workshops now dominate the waste processing industry in the community. However, the community has not received substantial economic benefits from the processing of e-waste.
