Commentaries on Pindar give Boreas as a god of winter for his aniconic statues. But as he is said to have been the king of the winds, he may be considered a weather god. In Pindar's Odes (trans. Conway) (Greek lyric C5th B.C.), Boreas is one of the Anemoi, the four gods of the winds, who blow from the east, north, south and west (or, in some versions, from north, east and south). The Anemoi were often equated with Zephyros and Kalais, though the identity of Zephyros is not certain.
